Energy Climate Biodiversity, 2030 now!

Energy Climate Biodiversity, 2030 now!

with European Cities for Trees Alliance launching ceremony

This event is part of the EU Sustainable Energy Week - Energy Days.

Europe faces a triple challenge: energy, climate and biodiversity. Cities are drivers of change. Thus, an inspiration for transition in Europe.

Inspiration may emerge from both, the innovative approaches to respond to the urgent need of transition and growing levels of cooperation across borders, sectors, regions and states and cultures. Cities faces a number of specific challenges, particularly on the field of mobility, re-humanisation and naturalization. To face all these challenges cities are more and more open to dialog with citizens, industry, society and other levels of administration.

Vienna Smart City

Smarter Together

SMARTER TOGETHER’s overarching vision is to find the right balance between smart technologies and organizational/ governance dimensions in order to deliver smart and inclusive solutions and to improve citizen’s quality of life.

SMARTER TOGETHER gather the European Lighthouse cities Lyon, Munich, Vienna, the Follower cities Santiago de Compostela, Sofia, Venice and Kyiv and Yokohama as observer cities bringing the perspective of East Europe and Asia. The cities are complemented by business partners from energy, mobility and ICT sectors, leading European research and academia organizations, European city network. From the various combinations of the different selected Light House areas, multiples opportunities to learn are offering.

The project demonstration area in Vienna is located in the central part of the south-eastern district of Simmering between Simmeringer Hauptstraße (an ancient main street axis) and the eastern railway line (district areas of Geiselberg, Enkplatz, Braunhuberviertel). In total, 21 000 inhabitants will benefit from smart project solutions within the fields refurbishment, energy, mobility and information and communication technologies. An emphasis is made on dialogue, in line with the Vienna Smart City Framework Strategy where the human dimension of the Smart City is the focus of attention. Dialogue includes all generations and backgrounds aiming at contributing to an integrated societal dynamic. Partnership includes all actors, from government to citizens to business players and NGOs, where everyone has a specific responsibility towards achieving the common goals.

City Strategy

With the Smart City Wien framework strategy, Vienna is charting its course towards becoming a “smart city”.

This is a course that differs from the strategies of other cities in one key respect: Vienna will not let anybody down.

Vienna’s Smart City strategy is characterized by both an internal effect to render existing plans even more ambitious and to inspire new ideas. At the same time, its external effect is to create an international frame of reference for what is happening here and to generate publicity for Vienna’s aims.

For Vienna, the integration of the social component into all areas is an essential element of its framework strategy. Climate-related and ecological objectives and the improvement of the everyday realities of its citizens are assigned the same importance in Vienna. Cities are smart if all people living in them have access to the same degree of participation.

The Smart City Wien framework strategy constitutes a milestone in the future development of the Austrian capital – a strategy designed to ensure that all Viennese will continue living in the world’s most liveable city even in the coming decades.
