The WEAR Sustain Open Call Launch event is the starting point for something big.
WEAR Sustain is looking for teams to work together to design and develop compelling aesthetic, ethical, environmental, and sustainable solutions for wearable technology and smart or e-textiles development, across all possible application domains.
The WEAR (Wereable technologists Engage with Artist for Responsible Innovation) project 2020 is a project funded by Horizon 2020, which started in January 2017 and ends in December 2018 and represents one of the 3 main projects of the STARTS initiative.
The aim is to involve the co-design and co-development of a new generation of wearable technologies and smart textiles in order to influence change in the industry in the context of the circular economy. Thus, the project aims to bring together artists, designers and professionals of the textile industry with engineers and programmers who, in partnership, address this challenge in order to reach their potential for success.
This launching session will introduce the project to all participants, followed by a framework of what is the reality, activity and importance of the textile industry in Guimarães. The event will also provide sessions of co-work, co-thinking and co-development between artists/designers and engineers/technologists with the aim of reaching innovative and sustainable wearables.
Up to €50,000 of funding is available to each team, which offers the means to jumpstart promising co-created concepts. Winners will be promoted as pioneers of ethical and sustainable wearables, and e-textiles.
Topic of the call: Development of compelling, innovative, ethical and sustainable solutions for wearable technology and e textiles development.
Beneficiaries: Teams of artists, designers, as well as other creative professionals, ICT entrepreneurs and engineers
Funding: Each team (48 in total) will receive 50.000€ to develop a prototype over a 6 month period.

Guimarães is a city and municipality located in northern Portugal, in the district of Braga. Its historic center is listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Guimarães is the heart of the textile industry in Portugal, where 80% of the companies that work in this sector are concentrated.
“Guimarães Marca” initiative is a key strategy of the Municipality of Guimarães. The initiative is promoted by the Division of Economic Development and, in cooperation with companies established in the municipality, aims to promote the economic and cultural business heritage of the municipality. Therefore it aims at reinforcing the idea of Guimarães as a territory of opportunities to invest, recognizing the quality and excellence of the products that are born and developed in the city, taking its prestiged seal beyond borders.
The companies that joined the initial phase of the project are characterized by being prestigious organizations with a leading position in sectors such as home textiles, footwear, cutlery, clothing and cardboard at the national level. The majority of these companies exports 90 percent of its products.
In the medium term, the goal is to bring together as many as possible companies in the region. The adhesion to the project will be subject to registration and validation, which will privilege solid companies that comply with social, inclusive and sustainability parameters.

Was manager at Banco BPI, having previously played roles in the Portuguese Business Bank, having joined the Millenium BCP 20 years. Is Chairman of the Board of Taipas Turitermas, President of the Social Center Padre Manuel Joaquim Sousa - IPSS and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of CART.
Berit Greinke is a senior researcher in the research group ‘Connected Textiles’ at Design Research Lab, Berlin University of the Arts. Her work focuses on design methods and fabrication techniques for electronic textiles, combining crafts with traditional textile and novel manufacturing technologies.
Her role on the WEAR project involves working with the partners to deliver the Innovation Support packages and develop a Sustainability Strategy and Toolkit.
Rita Salvado is Auxiliar Professor at the Textile Department and Adjoint Director of the Textile Museum of the University of Beira Interior. She got the PhD in Textile Engineering in 2002. In 2003, she was awarded with “The Fiber Society Student Award for the Best research paper”.
In 2013 she was awarded with “The UBI Pedagogic Award” for the work in Textile and Fashion Design. Her research and teaching activities are focused on the synergy between Textile Engineering and Design, mainly boosted by wearable technology and interactive textiles. She has been cooperating with industry through independent financed research projects.
Master in Mechanical Engineering, Energy. As a researcher in the field of mathematical modeling, was the author of a substantial number of publications and systems used by international industry groups.

Nuno Soares holds a graduation in Economics and MSc in CSR and he is since 2005 the Business Development Officer (BDO) of INOVA+, in charge of the Business Development and Marketing areas. With more than 15 years of experience as senior innovation consultant and funding advisor he collaborates in several National and European technology based projects focusing technology transfer and results exploitation areas.
During the last years he was directly involved in the creation of 15 new startups from different tech areas: robotics, WSN, RFID, mobile games. In cooperation with 2 Business Angels, they launched a seed funding Company (INDEX TALENT) with a dedicated seed fund (1,4M€) to invest in new technology based companies.
Marta Teixeira Pinto is a consultant at INOVA+ specialized in European Project Management, who is passionate about social innovation. Blending these passions, the focus of her work over the past 8 years has been on researching and building capacity, through strategy development and impact assessment on a National, and European basis. Her work can be found in CASI project – which aimed at developing common framework for the assessment and management of sustainable innovation through public participation – and in VERTIGO Starts project – aimed at pairing visionary technologists (representatives of ICT-projects) with leading artists in a co-creation environment, by supporting the implementation of 45 artistic residencies.
Marta Teixeira Pinto holds a Post-graduation in Entrepreneur Communication from Porto Business School and a degree in International Affairs from University of Minho. She is also a certified trainer and has participated in courses promoted by Stanford University and by Pennsylvania State University.
